Diseases or personal failings?

In your opinion, to what extent are personal problems like depression or addiction "diseases of the brain" or personal failings? Discuss examples of psychological issues that you have observed in friends and family that are related to the function of the brain in some way.

In my opinion, personal problems are somewhere in between diseases of the brain and personal failings. I think it starts out as diseases of the brain and then becomes a personal failing. These problems, such as depression, I believe are chemical imbalances in the brain. I think that this leads to self-confidence issues, feeling like a failure, and getting harder and harder on oneself, which leads to more personal failings.
Obsessive compulsive disorder is a brain disease. It is a mental disorder where negative thoughts lead to anxiety. This is an example of a disorder that is not brought on by personal failings, but can lead to them.
